  1. Sophia Skedros says:

After listening to this piece I compared it to the Carlo Gesualdo and Claudio Monteverdi pieces. I think the differences and progression between the two could represent an example of Abraham Flexner’s theory. Instead of having a controlled process of creating music, history, society and human curiosity have allowed music to advance and develop into new genres and styles. Could music and its new advancements be classified as usefulness of useless knowledge?

    • We’ll get into this question in some detail later in the semester, when we read and discuss Kant. For now, I’ll just say that I recorded this piece of music within no goal in mind, other than to see what a particular scale might lead to if passed through every possible permutation. What pleased me was to find that certain moments in it could be beautiful – at least to my ear – despite the overall darkness of the piece. In this respect, it might well be somewhat analogous to the Mannerist music of Gesualdo, though the dramatic shifts in my song are far less drastic than his.
